This popular drainage provides the quickest access to both Challenger Point and Kit Carson Mountain. For those hungry for some of Colorado’s highest peaks but are yet to make any attempts this is the trip for you. Cascading waterfalls, a beautifully, well-maintained trail, the experience of summitting one of Colorado’s tallest peaks, and the possibility of spotting big horned sheep make this an unforgettable adventure.

Day one: We will leave Santa Fe at 6am, and take the gorgeous drive into the San Luis valley on Highway 285. A stopover in the small, inviting town of Crestone, CO will be where we say goodbye to civilization.

We will begin our trek from the Willow and South Crestone trailhead. Let the climbing begin! After about two miles of moderate hiking and about 1,000ft of elevation gain we will switchback up to a ridge overlooking Willow creek park (meadow). We will break here and give our senses a chance to adapt to the wilderness. As we trek through the forest towards Lower Willow Lake the views of the towering peaks dominate the skyline. As we find ourselves further into the drainage it just gets better and better. After about 2 and a half more miles and roughly 1,800ft of climbing we will arrive at the captivating Willow Lake. We will plan to make our basecamp near the lakes outlet where there are ample campsites to choose from.

Day two: In order to increase our chances of a successful summit we must start our climb early. 5am will be the departure time we’ll shoot for. Trust me, I don’t want to wake up this early but in this part of the country at this time of year these early starts play a huge role in whether or not we make it to the top. As we round the impressive lake the steep scree slope approach to Challenger will present itself. Marmots frequent this area and it would be rare to not see one. Thanks to the forest service and some very willing individuals this approach has been aggressively maintained and manicured by trail crew. We’ll patiently make our way up 2,000ft to Challenger’s sweeping ridge. The ridgecrest will feel much like a summit of its own. Huge 360 degree views will take over. A short but breathtaking walk on this rocky ridgeline will bring us to Challenger’s summit where a summit registry should be awaiting our arrival. Take in the never-ending views and this unforgettable mountain top. The Great Sand Dunes and the San Luis valley will be literally 6,000 feet below us. When ready we will make our way back to camp returning the same way we came up.

Day three: If desired we will have the option to explore more of the upper basin and the wildness of this incredible high country. Either way whenever we’re ready we will descend the same way we came up, but as we return we will come back as better individuals for having experienced one of Colorado’s most desirable destinations. I envision a stop in Crestone for much needed showers and a solid bite to eat mixed with settling back into the groove with civilization. We will head back to Santa Fe on 285. The drive should give everyone enough time for the past few days to sink in.
